LOYIC is part of the UN Global Compact, , the international corporate social responsibility initiative which promotes the implementation of Ten Universal Principles among its participants. These are in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment and the fight against corruption. It brings together more than 11,500 companies from 156 countries and has a UN mandate to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the private sector.
“For LOYIC it represents both a challenge and an added value to be part of this great project. It reinforces our commitment to actively contributing to improving society on a social, economic and environmental level,” says Jorge Chaves, our Managing Director.
Involving ourselves in the Global Compact means utilising a management model based on sustainability, which implies commitment and planning. We will take advantage of the new framework we have been given, to carry out different actions, both as part of our responsibilities and in line with our possibilities. These will be added to other actions that we have already promoted at LOYIC, such as developing an Employment Plan for Equality in the Human Resources Department, or launching various activities to bolster a more sustainable office:
- Selective waste collection.
- The elimination of disposable plastic cups and utensils.
- The use of reusable bottles.
- Working paper-free. Our processes do not depend on physical documents.
- The study and constant review of processes and investments in new technologies that allow us to be increasingly effective and efficient. This will save resources and increase productivity and profitability.
Being part of the Global Compact brings us a little closer to what we have always wanted to be: a modern, dynamic and international company that promotes sustainable development (understood as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy theirs), ensuring collaborative work and creativity among its employees. These are values that we also apply when establishing quality and trusting relationships with clients and suppliers.
The only possible path
At LOYIC we are convinced that the only viable path is the path to sustainability. The Global Footprint Network organisation studies the consumption of all the planet’s resources. Each year it calculates on what day Earth Overshoot Day, will occur. This is the day in which we will have used up the resources that the Earth can generate in a year.
This year, Earth Overshoot Day 2020 was on 22nd August. From that day on, we are using up the reserves. We currently waste the resources of 1.6 planet Earths per year. If this continues, in 2050 we will need the resources of 2.5 planets. The problem is that we have just one. The consequences of overexploitation are many and no country is immune, although the most worrying is undoubtedly climate change. It is everyone’s responsibility, including private companies, to change things.
